Prayer and Fasting for GAFCON - Day 1

Opening Sentence
O send out thy light and thy truth, that they may lead me, and bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy dwelling. Psalm xliii. 3.

A Psalm of Ascent
Psalm 122
I WAS glad when they said unto me : We will go into the house of the Lord.
2. Our feet shall stand in thy gates : O Jerusalem.
3. Jerusalem is built as a city : that is at unity in itself.
4. For thither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the Lord : to testify unto Israel, to
give thanks unto the Name of the Lord.
5. For there is the seat of judgement : even the seat of the house of David.
6. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem : they shall prosper that love thee.
7. Peace be within thy walls : and plenteousness within thy palaces.
8. For my brethren and companions' sakes : I will wish thee prosperity.
9. Yea, because of the house of the Lord our God : I will seek to do thee good.
GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
AS it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Book of Common Prayer, 1662

Prayer
Thank you, Holy Spirit, for guiding GAFCON’s leaders to honor and converse with Anglican, Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Eastern Catholic churches and Palestinian Christians and Messianic Jews in Jerusalem. Thank you for all who work for the peace of Jerusalem, and for the continuing presence of the Church in the Holy Land. Amen.

Lesson (from Morning Prayer, BCP 1928)
So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron's staff was among them. Moses placed the staffs before the LORD in the Tent of the Testimony.
The next day Moses entered the Tent of the Testimony and saw that Aaron's staff, which represented the house of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds. Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the LORD's presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each man took his own staff.
The LORD said to Moses, "Put back Aaron's staff in front of the Testimony, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die." Moses did just as the LORD commanded him.
Numbers 17:6-11, NIV

Prayer
Jesus, our Great High Priest, we ask you to prepare signs of your blessing for the GAFCON pilgrims. Show your favor to obedient and fruitful Anglican leaders when they gather in Jerusalem. We ask this in your Name. Amen.

Second Lesson (from Morning Prayer, BCP 1928, and the Canticle at Evening Prayer)
And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
St. Luke 1:39-56, KJV

Prayer
Father in Heaven, Mary said “Yes” to the role you chose for her, and on a journey to the hills of Judah she sang your praise. Accept the oblation of the GAFCON pilgrims, who will go up to Jerusalem. Let their souls magnify you and their spirits rejoice in Christ the Savior. Fill them with your Holy Spirit to carry out the work you have for each, that generations to come may be blessed with them. We ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

We used Psalm 122 as a canticle this morning. Seemed to be a good way to work the Psalms of Ascent into the Daily Office.
